It is said that the media is a second government inside a country. The mass media obtains a significant level of influence over the public. Therefore, whoever controls the media can form a public opinion, and it would be almost impossible to prove otherwise. Analyzing the inability of ordinary citizen’s investigative attitude and increasing pressure on alternative media will show this.
For one, most people tend to believe what they read and watch on mass media without questioning. For instance, media managers aware of this human trait broadcast news with biased headings to form incorrect judgments. However, when we click the headlines, we can read completely different information inside the article. Thus, misusing the information about human psychology, broadcasting companies instil their selected opinion and form desired assumptions based on their preferences.
Secondly, independent bodies that fight to reveal the truth and present alternative approaches remain weak and have almost no effect on changing popular trends. The Independent Reporters have estimated that the influence of non-governmental broadcasting bodies remains only 5% worldwide. Moreover, pressure on reporters, which is prevalent in developing and developed countries, worsens the situation. Therefore, as the threats over independent journalists and difficulties in spreading alternative views will remain unchanged, the mass media will always form public opinion.
As a result, the lack of interest shown by ordinary people and scarcity of real news are the main reasons mass media will be the primary influencer of the population. It stands to reason that they will enjoy this situation if citizens are not extra selective to what they consume as information. It is hoped that in the future alternative ideas and opinions will be shared without any fear.

Band score: 5.5

Since this is an opinion essay, it is required to present just one line of contrast after the two opinionated paragraphs.

Sentence structure: “Analyzing the inability of ordinary citizen’s investigative attitude” could be rephrased in a better manner.

In today’s world, media plays an imperative role in the society and hence, they should be independent without any conflict of interest. However, in many countries, they are controlled by some influential figures or Government, and we can do little about this alarming situation.

Countries that are governed by communist party are the countries that have very less or no independence to media. Opinion of people of such countries are regulated by the stringent laws enacted by the Government. For example, China is ruled by a communist party and their law imposes severe punishment to whomsoever tries to raise voice against the Government. Last year, a scientist of a laboratory situated in Wuhan (China) was arrested and jailed for commenting that it was Wuhan from where the Covid 19 virus emerged. This augments the view that the people in China are afraid to give independent opinion and their attitude is controlled by the Government.

Another prominent example of is North Korea which is fully controlled by their supreme leader, Kim Jong Un. As a matter of fact, public of North Korea have no view of their own and if they try to raise their voice, not only the individual is punished but also his family have to bear the burden of his actions. In fact, their media only broadcasts channels that depicts the persona of their supremo and their education also revolves around the leader.

With such laws & regulations that are totally controlled by Government, how can one expect to rectify the situation! Even having global bodies such as UN, the plight of the public of such countries is pathetic. There is very little that can be done to improve the situation.
