Should students evaluate, question and assess the quality of lessons and teachers? Some believe the practice of questioning or criticizing the teachers’ work from students is improper and disrespect, whilst others argue that phrasing questions and assessment to the lessons are what students should implement. After weighting evidences, I find the latter viewpoint more convincing as evaluation after using service, education, is a common sense and as a tool for education improvement.
Every products, services should being worth our money and time, regardless paid directly by users or third party, through our assessment on services’ performances. It is also true to apply this philosophy into a service of spending money in form of tuition to exchange for information, knowledge and mind-set, which frankly so-called education in schools by teachers. Regarding the true nature of functionality, teachers, tour guides or waiters all play the same function in their workplaces, which is supplying the service. They might supply their service in different forms as giving knowledge, guiding tourists, or serving the food, respectively. We always say this is the era of equality, while there has never been a backlash around should we have the assessment the serving of a waiter or not but some of us stop children from evaluating or questioning their teachers. The fact seems goes against our belief in equality and how economic rule works. For examples, developed countries as USA, England or Germany, they welcome the fair and proper assessment from students because that is the privilege of students.
Bettering off education is one of the benefits from students’ evaluation to teachers’ performance. First, evaluating teachers’ quality helps students to gain a critical thinking, debating, fact checking abilities, and better their learning to the subjects and life skills because once we let students practice the right to evaluate teachers, students need to research more papers to double check with what they learnt, to use fact, examples, proofs to compare, to criticize teachers. Secondly, the quality of teachers in some countries in fact is not qualified enough to teach, which might results in the ruin of whole student generation without any timely intervention from schools authorities or governments. For examples, in 2010, the loose admission in pedagogic major in Viet Nam unintentionally gave the green light for those who fail other university entrances with no interest of teaching to become teachers in the future. Combining with that, bribe to have a well-paid job as teachers also place students in the situation of learning with less customized, experienced teachers. Consequently, students have their voice out freely for help from schools, or they stuck in a bad environment for years.
conclusion, students should evaluate teachers in the right manner and procedure because it helps students better in self-studying, teacher teach more interestingly and properly.
