Often, students think by using complex sentences, they can achieve a 7+ band score. Most of them would be unsure of what complex sentences entail.
For Band 6, you must use basic & complex sentences & Band 8+, you must use complex sentences. Knowing when to use them is the key.
A sentence contains a series of words describing emotions, thoughts & situations. The definitions, structures, verb position & forms vary as per the types.
A properly written ‘Complex Sentence’ is a full sentence with a lot of detail. Your English abilities are shown by writing a “well-structured” & correct statement.
Additionally, you should use a wide range of sentence structures reflecting your grammar mastery, pronunciation, vocabulary, &synonyms.
"Use Subordinate Clauses
For example: My brother felt sick because he ate too many chocolate bars.
My brother felt sick. (simple/independent clause)
He ate too many chocolate bars. (dependent clause)"
"Use Relative Clauses
People: who/that
Places: where
Things: which/that
Example: They arrested the man who spied for America."
You can use complex sentences anywhere in the essay but particularly good for topic sentences or as supporting sentences.
