The IELTS Writing Task 2 Discussion essay asks you to discuss both sides of an argument before giving your opinion. But can you actually add your opinion?
Yes, you can add your opinion in the IELTS Writing Task 2 Discussion essay. In fact, you are expected to give your opinion in the conclusion.
However, your opinion should not be the main focus. Spend most of the essay objectively discussing both sides of the argument, using examples and reasons.
Only devote 1 paragraph to giving your opinion. Don't say which side you completely agree or disagree with. Be measured and balanced in your viewpoint.
Phrase your opinion tentatively e.g. 'It seems that...', 'There is some merit in...', 'It could be argued that...' rather than definitively taking a side.
Back your opinion up with logic and evidence rather than just personal belief. This shows the examiner you can think critically.
So yes, you can add your opinion in Task 2 Discussion essays, but it should be a small, balanced part of a mostly objective discussion.
