IELTS writing penalty for being under words

Did you know that being under words in the IELTS has a penalty? Find it out in this story.
For Writing Task 1, you have to write at least 150 words, and for Writing Task 2, the minimum word limit is 250 words.
As you can see, only the minimum limit is mentioned. So, if words are less than the recommended word count, your band score would be negatively affected.
There is no set upper limit for both tasks. However, just because you have written extra does not mean you’ll get a high score.
While all the words are counted, some are counted as one word even though they are composed of two or more words.
Those words are compound noun, hyphenated words, numbers & dates, words with symbols, prepositions and articles.
Tip: Do not count the number of words as it is a timed exam. Rather, train until you get a good idea of whether you have reached the prescribed word limit.
