English-speaking skills might seem like a big piece of bread to gulp to some. Call it its dominance or popularity, the English language and communication skills are instrumental in various arenas of life- Personal and Professional. Due to this, the most common question that gets to be asked is how to improve English speaking skills. And, if that can be learned at home, even better. Although one can’t substitute the essence of a trainer or spoken English mentor, there are various ways to improve your English communication skills.
7 Effective Ways to Improve English speaking skills at home
English speaking skills can be learnt at home easily if you are mindful of what you do, and hence, here we have 7 tried and tested methods to level your game up!
1. You become what you consume- The Content! :
Perhaps one of the most common and yet the most important way to aim at improving your English at home is by consuming the content in the English language. Be it reading, watching, or listening, always ensure to get your content served in English. Believe it or not, the more your brain gets used to the English language, the easier it gets for you to learn it. Even if the content you watch has somewhat difficult language or the way of communication seems to be bumping off your head, try switching on the subtitles. The first way to learn something is by overcoming your comfort zone. In this case, it’s the affinity towards your native language.
2. Practising monologues:
Practising talking in English alone might not seem interesting to you regarding improving your English communication skills. But, it is the best way to practice it. Think about copying a monologue of your favourite characters; try to ape them (no, not their character, but the way they speak). Gradually you will feel comfortable talking in English. The idea is that some people might not find the inspiration to start talking randomly when they are alone. Hence, copying someone shall put them at ease.
3. Recording your progress:
You might not evaluate yourself if you don’t see the improvement with respect to the last day. Therefore, it becomes crucial to record your improvements, progress, faults, and so on. For this, you can either record the way you speak through a voice recorder or might record yourself on a camera to see your body language- confident or not, etc. If you want to have a constant tab on how you speak, you can practice speaking in English while looking into a mirror. But, remember not to get conscious as some people get uncomfortable talking to themselves while looking into the mirror.
4. Talking to a friend or a family member:
Probably the best solution of how to improve English communication skills is by talking to someone- your friend, relative, family member, etc. If you have someone in your friend circle who you think is a decent English speaker, try talking to them. It is seen quite commonly how talking to someone in a language helps you improve your communication. This way, they can also give you feedback on how you are doing, areas of improvement, your non-verbal communication, etc. Moreover, you will not be bored.
5. Listening to interviews:
The most important way to improve a skill is to ensure you have verve, passion and interest. You might lose track of learning to improve your English communication skills due to your lack of interest, and hence, interviews come to your rescue in that case. Your loved celebrities, the way they talk, and what they talk will keep you interested and invested in improving your spoken English skills. It is quite obvious that we tend to spend a lot of time listening to those who feel good about. Hence, when you watch your favourite people speaking, subconsciously, you try to copy them as well. You will not even realise it, and you will start getting better!
6. Imagine a situation and start speaking:
Somewhat like what we learnt in the point of monologue, this time you won’t have to copy anyone. All you need to do is imagine a situation from your day-to-day instances and start talking about it in English. For example, you can talk about the workload you have these days and how it has affected your health (it might sound like a rant, but that’s ok as long as it improves your English language skills). You will make many mistakes initially, but eventually, you will get the hang of it without any inconvenience in talking in English.
7. Make notes of new words and phrases:
We come across many people daily, and everybody has a different conversation style. Always try to make notes of new phrases or words in English that you get to learn from others. For example, you might listen to phrases such as “Working on toes.” Now, it might not make a lot of sense literally, but metaphorically, it means to work hard. Similarly, you might listen to another phrase such as, “I got lashed out on..” this means that ‘I’ was scolded badly by someone. Hence, by learning such words and phrases, you will see a lot of improvement in yourself.
So these were the most effective ways to improve English speaking skills that you can try sitting at home. By the way, if you want to learn it even better, you can also try enrolling in online classes. You trainers would be able to better judge you based on your language skills and your daily progress.
Keep practising!
