Answer Key of Ocean Biodiversity IELTS Listening with Explanation
1 Answer: conservation
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: The speaker mentions in the first few lines that biologists consider some specific places as biodiversity hotspots. They contain different species (greatest mixture of species) and are important (significant) for locating target areas (key areas) for conservation. Hence, the answer is ‘conservation’.
2 Answer: food/foods
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: While discussing the efforts of Boris Worm, a Canadian biologist, the speaker explains that Worm identified five ocean hotspots. Out of these five, four had enough food supply, but the fifth one was lacking in food. This points out that ocean hotspots are not always rich in food supply. Hence, the answer is ‘food/foods’.
3 Answer: surface
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: Boris Worm also found out that the surface of the water had a higher temperature even though the temperature in the depths was cool. Hence, the answer is ‘surface’.
4 Answer: oxygen/O2
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: Worm also discovered that besides the difference in water temperature at the surface and the depths, an appropriate level of oxygen is also a contributing factor to the development of biodiversity in the ocean hotspots. Hence, the answer is ‘oxygen/O2’.
5 Answer: mammals
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: The speaker mentions another researcher named Lisa Ballance, who was interested in ocean hotspots, specifically for marine mammals like seals. Hence, the answer is ‘mammals’.
6 Answer: ice
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: Through the Census of Marine Life, an international project for surveying oceans all over the world, researchers came to know that there were numerous species that lived below the ice. Hence, the answer is ‘ice’.
7 Answer: decline/declining/decrease
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: In the second half of the audio, the speaker informs that the Global Marine Species Assessment is listing endangered ocean species based on three factors – population size, geographical distribution, and the declining rate of the species. Hence, the answer is ‘decline/declining/decrease’.
8 Answer: map
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: Under the Global Marine Species Assessment, researchers have identified 1,500 species and want to increase the number to 20,000, after which they aim to create a map to show each of their distribution. Hence, the answer is ‘map’.
9 Answer: migration
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: Some recommendations have been made to retain ocean biodiversity. One of them is to create corridors for migration, especially for turtles who live in the high sea but build their nest on the coasts. Hence, the answer is ‘migration’.
10 Answer: consumption
Question Type: Note Completion
Answer Explanation: The fourth step under the recommendations to retain ocean biodiversity is that commercial fishing boats should use selective equipment to catch fish only for consumption to avoid endangerment. Hence, the answer is ‘consumption’.
