What is the IELTS General Training Test?
IELTS General Training test is an English language test to test the English language skills of applicants who wish to work in countries like the U.K, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. The IELTS General exam assesses you on the four aspects of language skills: Speaking, Writing, listening, and Reading.
Reading: The reading section evaluates your English reading skills. It contains 40 questions, and you will be given 3 passages. The first two passages consist of several short texts, and the third passage contains a long text. You will be given 60 minutes to read the passage and answer the respective questions like short answers, summary completion, matching headings, etc.
Writing: The writing section of the IELTS General test evaluates your English writing ability. It consists of 2 writing tasks. In the first task, you will be asked to write a letter in 150 words, and in the second task, you will be asked to write an essay in not less than 250 words. You will be given 60 minutes to complete the task.
Listening: The Listening section is designed to evaluate your listening skills. It consists of 4 sections. An audio recording will be played in each section. Based on what you hear, you are expected to answer 40 questions in 30 minutes,
Speaking: Speaking is divided into 3 sections. In the first part, you are asked basic information about yourself and your hobbies, childhood, job, etc. In the second and third parts, you will be given a cue card, on which you will be expected to speak for 2-3 minutes, and asked follow up questions on the same. This section is for 12-14 minutes.
Which organizations ask for IELTS?
More than 10,000 organizations in about 140 countries accept the IELTS General test as evidence of English language skills. Professional bodies representing healthcare professionals such as nurses, pharmaceuticals, medicines ask for English language competency. Other than these professional bodies, other sectors which ask for IELTS scores are engineering, accounting, law, and veterinary practice. Moreover, employers from different sectors such as construction, tourism, aviation, etc., also ask for IELTS band scores.
It helps organizations or your potential employers evaluate your potential and English communication skills essential in English-speaking countries. They need to ascertain that you can deal with any problem that you may face while living in their country.
Since each organization has set a minimum band score requirement, it is necessary to check with the concerned authorities about the IELTS band score requirements. But it is also upto the corporate bodies to determine what IELTS band score is acceptable.
Exam Validity: The IELTS is valid upto 2 years from the date of the exam.
Required IELTS band score for various organizations: On an average, minimum band score of 6 is accepted, but any band score above 7 is considered a good band score, and good band scores increase the chances of employment in top organizations.
Test duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes
Number of times tests can be taken: There is no limit set by the IELTS conducting bodies.
How many times an exam is conducted in a year: There is no fixed time. It is conducted several times a year across various test centers.
