In the IELTS Speaking test, you will be assessed based on four main criteria like: Vocabulary, Grammar, Fluency and Coherence, and Pronunciation. Each of which contributes to 25% of your total score. 5 IELTS Pronunciation Features You Need to Master

1. Individual Sounds

Every word in English consists of unique vowel and consonant sounds. Hence, you must find the tricky ones and practice them consistently.

2. Word Stress

Emphasizing the correct syllable in words is important in English.

For example:

• Photograph (stress is on the first syllable).
• Photographer (stress is on the second syllable).
• Photographic (stress is on the third syllable).

When you misplace word stress, it can confuse the examiner and will affect your score.

3. Sentence Stress

Content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) in English are usually stressed, whereas the function words (prepositions, pronouns) are not stressed.

For example:

“Meet her at 10pm on the corner of 7th and 6th Streets.”
Here, you would stress the words meet, 10pm, corner, 7th, 6th, and Streets.

With this, the listener will be able to grasp the important part in the whole sentence.

4. Linking Sounds

The native English speakers often try to connect words in order to create a smooth flow in their speech and that is a linking sound.

For example:

“It’s a bit of an issue” sounds like “itsa bitovan issue.”

Understanding and practicing these kinds of linkages will make you sound more fluent in the language.

5. Intonation

This is the rise and fall of your voice as you speak. In other words, it is the highs and lows that you use while you talk.

A falling tone can show certainty, whereas a rising tone can show questions or enthusiasm.

For example:

“That’s fine!” (rising tone = excitement) vs. “That’s fine.” (flat tone = disappointment).

How Do You Learn Pronunciation?

It is by making use of syllables and phonemes.

Syllable

The dictionary defines syllable as a unit of pronunciation which has one vowel sound with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word

For example,

• The word wreck has one syllable : wreck
• The word water has two syllables : wa-ter
• The word beautiful has three syllables : beau-ti-ful
• The word championship has four syllables: cham-pi-on-ship

Phoneme

A phoneme is the sound of the spoken language. The dictionary defines it as the smallest unit of sound that distinguishes one word from another.

• Let’s take the same examples wreck and water
• Wreck has three phonemes – /r/e/k/
• Water has four phonemes – w/a/t/er

Note: Not every syllable has a corresponding phoneme.
