Describe an Occasion When You Used a Map – IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer 1
- When was it?
Recently, I went to Thailand for a vacation with my family. We were in a group with a tour guide, so initially we were enjoying ourselves thoroughly. However, the problem arose on the third day, when I was left behind in a shopping mall.
- Why did you use it?
One of my cousins and I were window shopping at a mall while our parents and other family members were scattered around buying their own stuff. We were instructed to meet at the entrance at 2:30 pm. However, the two of us were so involved in our explorations that we missed the time. When we realized the scenario, half an hour later, I called my mother and got to know that they had already reached the next destination. Since the kids and elders were gathered in different sections of the bus, they had missed us. I kept my cool and looked up for the location on Google maps and both of us hurried there.
- Was it challenging to use?
Since I am accustomed to using maps for my travels, it was a piece of cake for me. We reached on the time for the show, but were chided by our parents.
- And explain how you felt about it.
It was a little unnerving to be lost in a country I didn’t know. Nevertheless, both of us did not let that spoil the vacation for everyone. When my uncles and aunts were praising me for my composure and quick thinking, I felt good and saw my parents beam with pride.

Describe an Occasion When You Used a Map – IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer 2
- When was it?
My friends and I decided to go hiking in the Rocky Mountains last spring. Since we were not used to those terrains, we had to use the paper map we took with us.
- Why did you use it?
One of my friends who had already gone on this trek informed us that there might be network issues in that region. So, he advised us to carry a paper map in case we needed it. We relied on the map to help us negotiate the complex network of paths crisscrossing the rugged landscape of the Rockies. The ultimate goal was to make sure we stayed on course and arrived at the destination goal safely.
- Was it challenging to use?
None of us had any prior experience of handling a paper map as we mostly rely on electronic maps. Therefore, using a map to navigate the mountain routes brought its own set of difficulties. Eventually, we found our own tips and tricks to frequently consult the map and modify the itinerary because of the changing geography, erratic weather, and infrequent trail signs.
- And explain how you felt about it.
It was both thrilling and humble to use the map amid the Rocky Mountains. It served as a continual reminder of both the necessity of cautious planning and our overdependence on technology. We developed a greater respect for the wilderness and our navigational skills with each successful navigation, as well as a sense of self-assurance and fortitude that lasted long after the trip.

Describe an Occasion When You Used a Map – IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer 3
- When was it?
Using a map was one of the most memorable events of my life. It was not only because I learnt it for the first time but also because we won the treasure hunt in middle school for which we were using the maps.
- Why did you use it?
When I was in middle school, our school organized a summer camp in the nearby hilly region. One of the events of that summer camp was a treasure hunt. We were divided into groups and on the fourth day, after some explorations, we were given the map and explained the rules for the hunt. After the instructions, we set off on our trails to look for the treasure with the map.
- Was it challenging to use?
To be honest, it was quite difficult in the beginning as none of us could navigate the map correctly. This led to a rift between the team members. But I reminded them that we are competing against other teams and need to cooperate to find the treasure. So, gradually, with tidbits of information and opinions, we finally reached our destination before anyone else.
- And explain how you felt about it.
Using a map for a treasure hunt evokes a unique blend of excitement, anticipation, and adventure. I realized that this activity built a sense of teamwork and developed a feeling of accomplishment and adventure. In short, it was a journey of discovery, challenge, and camaraderie that leaves you with memories to cherish and stories to share for years to come.

Unlock Part 3 questions and answers
- What do people often do with a map?
Depending on unique demands and circumstances, a person’s daily map usage can vary widely. While some people may frequently use maps for navigation, particularly while visiting new or unfamiliar locations, others rely less on maps and more on digital mapping apps or GPS navigation systems for their daily navigation needs.
- How often do you use maps in your daily life?
Depending on what I need and what I do for a living, I use maps differently every day. I primarily rely on maps for navigation on days when I have to commute to different locations or visit unknown sites. I still use maps from time to time, even on days when I’m not travelling, to find addresses, make travel plans, or investigate local sights. I would therefore conclude that, on the whole, I utilise maps in my daily life several times a week.
- Are map reading skills critical?
Without a doubt, being able to read maps is useful, particularly in places where access to digital mapping tools or technology is scarce or unreliable. It is most crucial for outdoor sports, emergencies, and travelling to far or unknown places. In addition, the capacity to read maps cultivates spatial awareness, problem-solving abilities, and a greater understanding of geographic concepts.
- Are some people better at map-reading than others?
Certainly. Certain individuals may possess innate abilities in reading maps. But with experience and familiarity, map reading is a skill that can be honed and enhanced. While some people may find it easier or more pleasurable to read maps than others, everyone can learn how to use maps for exploration and navigation with time and effort.
- Why do most people prefer to use a paper map?
Most people prefer to use a paper map because of its tangibility and reliability. They feel that paper maps are more interesting and fulfilling than that of digital maps and since they don’t require batteries or technology, they are trustworthy navigational aids in isolated or off-grid locations.
- How has technology changed how people navigate compared to the past?
Compared to earlier times, technology has significantly changed how individuals navigate. The development of digital mapping applications, online mapping platforms, and GPS navigation systems has made navigation easier and more effective. Users can navigate more easily with the use of GPS devices and smartphone apps, which provide real-time navigation instructions, traffic updates, and route optimisation.
- What are the differences between paper and digital maps?
Paper and digital maps differ in terms of their characteristics and features. Paper maps don’t require batteries or technology; they are real and portable. They offer a comprehensive perspective of a region, but they are restricted to the data shown on the map and could eventually become out of current. Digital maps, on the other hand, are dynamic and interactive with real-time data updates. They include customisable layers, GPS technology integration, and cross-platform accessibility. But using digital maps means having to use electronics and internet access, and some users might not enjoy the tactile feel of a physical map.
- What do you think is more convenient than using a paper map or a map of your phone?
The ease of use of a digital map on a phone or a paper map depends on personal tastes, unique situations, and particular navigational requirements. In certain circumstances, such as outdoor activities when access to technology is restricted or when they prefer the visual appeal of utilising a physical map, some people may find paper maps more convenient. Because of their interactive capabilities, real-time updates, and compatibility with GPS navigation devices, some people might prefer digital maps on their phones.
- How does learning to read a map help you learn more about your country?
You can have a better understanding of your nation by learning to read a map. Maps illustrate the region’s mountains, rivers, and landforms, educating you about its scenic beauty. They also give you an introduction to the region’s history and cultural monuments. Comprehending maps enhances your physical awareness, enabling you to figure out the connections between cities and towns. Additionally, it gives you navigational abilities to explore your nation on hikes or road trips.
- Do you think traditional paper maps will become obsolete? Why or why not?
Even while digital mapping technologies are more widely used and sophisticated than ever, paper maps will probably never completely go out of style. Paper maps still have specific benefits such being tangibly represented, being portable, and not relying on technology, which makes them useful for a variety of uses, including outdoor recreation, disaster planning, and off-the-grid exploring.
