How to Put Examples in Your Essay

Using many relevant examples is the best way to write a good essay. However, there are a variety of approaches, some of which are correct and others that are incorrect.
In IELTS Writing task 2, it is crucial to elaborate your ideas and arguments in the body paragraphs and support your main idea . In addition, using relevant examples in your essay assists you in getting a high band score in task response.
In Writing task 2, you have to write at least 250 words in 30 to 40 minutes. You can get questions from the list of topics mentioned below:
- Discussion Essay
- Opinion Essay
- Cause and Solution Essay
- Advantage and Disadvantage Essay
- Direct Essay
The examiner will evaluate based on how you build your arguments or viewpoint in the body paragraph with the help of relevant examples. The examples provided must be specific to the task question and your viewpoint. Moreover, it should be easy to follow and realistic. It is not necessary to use real-life examples, but the examples you use must look realistic. In the IELTS exam, you do not need to write factual information, rather write information relevant to essay questions(it can be fabricated).
It is not mandatory to include examples in your essays; however, adding examples aids in the development of a well-organized response with specific and supportive ideas. For example, the Writing task 2 band descriptors are as follows:
- Task Response Band 9: “presents a thoroughly articulate stance in answer to the question with relevant suggestions that are valid, elaborated and well-organized.”
- Task Response Band 8: “presents a well-elaborated response to the question with relevant, suggestions that are valid and well-organized.”
- Task Response Band 7: “ presents, elaborates and supports key ideas, but overgeneralizes it and/or lacks emphasis on supporting ideas.”
What is the most appropriate place to add examples in an essay?
It is best to place examples after the key idea or topic sentence. It can be used in the middle of supporting ideas or sentences. It can also be used as part of a new sentence. There are no set guidelines on where examples can be included in essays. They are extensively used towards the end of the paragraphs, along with supporting ideas.
What sort of examples can be used?
You can use personal examples, but ensure it does not seem too casual. You can also cite from a journalism article, magazine article, research article, and so on. But try to paraphrase the quotes instead of citing it as it is. You can also make up examples, but they must appear realistic and should not have any data or references as the examiner would not be able to verify them.
What should the example contain?
You can use a company name, a university name, a study, a newspaper name, a location (country, city), and a term that shows a pattern in the example. Besides that, avoid using statistics and numbers.

What to do if you don’t have any examples?
You can make up an example. In the IELTS marking criteria, there are no rules on how to use examples; all that matters is that you should support and explain your ideas in a realistic manner.
