Photographs are windows to the past, offering us access to times gone by. As a result, when we look at a photograph, we cannot help but experience a twinge of bittersweet yearning for those long-lost memories. One such photograph that holds many emotional memories for me is one photograph I took of a corridor in my school.
My school has always had a lot of memories for me, both positive and negative. While I enjoyed going to school when I was younger, I simultaneously could not wait to finish school once and for all so that I could leave and enter the wider world, which seemed more enticing as a child. However, when I finally entered college, I missed the place I had called home for fourteen years. Fortunately for me, my school had a tradition of hosting an elaborate Founder’s Day program, which included a long church service followed by a lunch for the former pupils. On my second Founder’s Day as a former student, I went around taking pictures of my school until I reached the topmost floor, where I met a few classmates and started chatting with them. As we were about to leave, I decided to take a photo of the corridor where we had been sitting.
The photograph, which is now around five years old, captures an old colonial-era corridor which is a collage of yellow and green, which were my school’s colors. There is a wooden floor and tall French windows that are letting the sunlight in. The winter sunlight creates a contrasting tapestry against the dark wood floor, weaving in and out of the photograph. The long corridor stretches right to the very end, with windows on the left and doors to smaller, adjoining rooms on the right. The top of the photograph captures a high ceiling painted in yellow, while the exposed beams are painted green. Lastly, in the bottom right corner of the photograph, stretching to the centre is an old, wooden staircase that leads to the floor below where the offices of the administrative staff and the Principal are located.
It reminds me of all the moments I experienced in school, from my Girl Guide meetings and classes to extracurricular events like our annual fete or concert. The photograph feels warm and familiar to me and is laden with all my fond memories of school. With so much changing in the past two years, this photograph will always be a reminder to me of what my school used to be and what will always await ex-students like me beyond the green gates of our beloved campus.

Pictures and photographs are beautiful things that help us cherish memories from the past and the present. As a proverbial saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”, but it is worth a thousand memories, too. Even a simple picture has a story to tell. So, here, I’d like to talk about a photograph containing many of my memories.
A couple of days back, when I was hunting for my certificates in the storeroom, I came across a rusted wooden box and I became inquisitive to find out what was actually stored in the box. So, I searched for the key on all the shelves and finally found it with a bunch of keys. When I unlocked the box, I discovered some of the most treasured pictures, including those from my childhood, our family, and my parents’ wedding.
These pictures brought back many memories of the days it was taken. One of the photographs I admired was our family photo, which was taken at least two decades ago during Christmas when we all gathered together for a feast. Everyone, including my grandparents, parents, paternal aunts, uncles, and cousins, was joyous and jubilant. I vividly remember that our family photographer, my uncle, took the picture after we completed our dinner that night.
Despite the corners of the photograph being faded, I have a lot of memories connected to it because it was the most memorable phase of my life, where I lived with my grandparents. During those days, everyone lived amicably. But unfortunately, after my grandparents’ demise, everyone separated due to property disputes and moved away to different places. Thus, when I discovered the photograph, I understood that memories last forever though things end.
