If you are planning to apply for a visa to New Zealand, you should have a proof of English language competence with you as all universities and colleges there have minimum language requirements. If you are travelling for the sake of employment, then your English should be competent and if you’re planning to migrate to set up a professional career like a doctor, nurse, teacher and so on then you must have an even higher English competence.
Level of English based on the Visa Type
In order to get a visa to New Zealand, you must be eligible to meet the standard English language which the New Zealand government expects. The New Zealand government trusts the IELTS exam to assist the process of granting visas for most of the different levels, such as Skilled Migrant, Work visas, Student visas and Residence from work categories.
Skilled Migrant Category

Entrepreneur Category
In the Entrepreneur category, you must get a band score of at least 4 in the IELTS examination in the General Training and Academic section. You must have the report as evidence of English language proficiency.
Investor Category
For the investor category, those under the Investor 1 category do not have any language requirements.
While those under the investor 2 category should have an overall band score of at least 3 in the IELTS examination.
Residence from Work Category
You will be eligible for Residence from Work Category of Visa only when you fulfil the conditions given below:
- You have been to New Zealand before on a Work to Residence visa or Talent Visa.
- Character and Health requirements are met.
- Have gained overall a band score of 5 in the IELTS examination.
Work Visa
There are no specific requirements of language for a work visa, however, depending on the person’s job description, the New Zealand immigration will expect you to have a certain level of language proficiency. So the immigration officer will assess the standard of the English language during the visa application process.
Student Visa
There is no requirement of language standards for a student visa. But, some of the institutions may have their own language standard requirement to offer a seat in their universities. You’ll have to find out the language standards set by the particular university for getting a seat.

Documents for the New Zealand Study Visa
The documents that are required to get a study visa for New Zealand are as follows:

- IELTS with an overall band score of at least 5.5.
- The passport must at least be valid for up to 6 months.
Offer letter
The offer letter will be released by any New Zealand institution based on the previous educational documents of the candidates as well as the IELTS scores received by the candidates.
Academic Records
For the postgraduate course in New Zealand, the universities of New Zealand will ask for the undergraduate academic records which are mandatory for the students who want seats in New Zealand universities.
Language Requirements
Adequate proof of Language proficiency must be given to the universities by the students who are going to apply for the same, in order to get the seat in the desired universities.
IELTS score
The undergraduate students must get the IELTS score of 6.0 whereas the postgraduate students must get the IELTS score of 6.5 in order to get a seat in the desired institution.
