Introduction to PTE Score
Your PTE score determines the trajectory of your future success and it is crucial for every individual making plans for international studies or work to understand how the PTE Score calculator works.
Find the complete breakdown of the PTE Score Calculator given below.
How is the PTE Score determined?
The PTE uses the Global Scale of English as a standard scale for reference. Thus, the PTE will allot the test-taker a score between 10-90, which can be used to provide a reliable evaluation of their English proficiency.
The scorecard will review a thorough analysis of the test taker’s language ability, including both an overall English score and scores for each of the subskills – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. This is referred to as the Communicative skills scores.
It also has a score for Six Enabling skills, which are used as the Fifth component. The average of these five scores is the final overall score.
You will need to complete around 52–64 questions in the proctored exam. There are up to 20 different types of questions. Your responses will be scored according to the following aspects:
- Content
- Oral Fluency
- Pronunciation
- Form
- Development, structure and coherence
- Grammar
- General linguistic range
- Vocabulary
Alt tag: The types of PTE exams include: PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Academic Online and PTE Home.
How is the Overall PTE Score Calculated?
The lengthy procedure of calculating PTE scores begins by calculating the Communicative Skills skills average. To generate a PTE score, all enabling skills scores must first be summed, and the resulting amount must then be divided by 6.
This is because there are 6 items in enabling skills – namely: grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse. Finally, the PTE score calculator takes the average of the six enabling skills into account, and this score is then added to the other four primary communicative skills—PTE speaking, PTE Listening, PTE writing, and PTE reading as the fifth contributing element.
To get the overall PTE score, the average of these five elements is calculated and then rounded off.
Let us consider an example of Candidate A, who has scored the following marks in the PTE:
Communicative Skills: | |
IELTS Listening | 89 |
IELTS Reading | 88 |
IELTS Speaking | 90 |
IELTS Writing | 89 |
Enabling Skills: | |
Grammar | 74 |
Oral fluency | 90 |
Pronunciation | 90 |
Spelling | 87 |
Vocabulary | 64 |
Written discourse | 43 |
Let’s calculate the overall PTE score for the above marks step by step.
To start with, we must add all the Enabling Skills scores together and divide the sum by 6, which amounts to 74.6. This is the Enabling Score of Candidate A.
Now we will add the four communicative skills scores and the final Enabling score together, which will be:
89+88+90+89+74.6 = 430.6.
This is followed by the division of the sum by 5 giving us a score of 86.1.
This will be rounded down to a Final PTE Score of 86.
Thus, the PTE Score calculations take into account each vital element of Language Proficiency to give you a reliable result.
