Band 9 Sample – Opinion Essay on Technology

Topic: Some people believe that technology is increasing the gap between rich and poor. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer:
In today's digital age, technology is evolving at a rapid pace, influencing every aspect of human life. While some argue that technological advancements have widened the gap between the rich and poor, I strongly disagree with this view. I believe technology, when accessible, can act as an equaliser in society.

Firstly, access to the internet and digital devices has created opportunities for people from less privileged backgrounds. For example, online education platforms such as Coursera or YouTube allow individuals to learn new skills without paying hefty fees. This empowers many to upskill and find better employment.

Secondly, mobile banking and e-commerce platforms have brought economic opportunities to remote areas. Farmers and small business owners can now sell their products online, access financial tools, and connect with markets they couldn't reach before.

Although the wealthy may have early access to new technology, the long-term effect of technological adoption is often inclusive and empowering. Therefore, I believe that technology, when properly integrated, reduces inequality rather than increasing it.

Band 9 Sample – Discussion Essay on Technology

Topic: Some people think the development of artificial intelligence will be beneficial to humanity. Others believe it may cause more harm than good. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Answer:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of technological innovation, sparking debates about its potential impact on society. Some see AI as a tool for progress, while others fear its consequences. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting my viewpoint.

Supporters of AI argue that it can greatly enhance productivity and efficiency. For instance, AI is used in healthcare to diagnose diseases faster and more accurately, potentially saving countless lives. In industries like manufacturing and logistics, automation reduces human error and operational costs, contributing to economic growth.

On the other hand, critics raise concerns about job displacement and ethical dilemmas. Many fear that increased automation will lead to widespread unemployment, especially in low-skill jobs. Moreover, decisions made by AI systems can be difficult to interpret or regulate, leading to accountability issues.

In my opinion, while AI does present risks, its benefits far outweigh them if properly managed. Governments and institutions should focus on ethical development and job reskilling programs to ensure a smoother transition into the AI-driven era.
