Sports and athletics are extremely popular forms of entertainment across the world. Every country has a sport that they adore and support with passion. Apart from that, having a successful national sports team is a prestigious honour for any country. In India, the country where I reside, cricket is the most popular sport among the general population.
Cricket is an age-old sport and the first references to cricket are found in South East England. Presently, it is popular, across the globe, especially in Commonwealth and British territories. There are certain gear and types of equipment that are necessary for playing cricket. These include the basic bat, ball and stumps. Protective equipment is also necessary to play cricket, like a helmet, knee pads, and gloves. Other types of equipment used include elbow pads and abdomen guards.
Cricket at its base is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams consisting of eleven players each. Typically, it is played on a field with a 20-metre pitch with a wicket at each end, comprising three stumps and two bails. The game begins with one team bowling and fielding and the other team batting. The intent is to strike the ball with the bat and score as many runs as possible, either by running from one end of the pitch to another or by scoring boundaries.
The popularity of cricket in India grew as early as the time of British rule in the country. The Indian population has always been very passionate about cricket, and some people put their heart and soul into this game. Cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli are no less than celebrities in our country. Cricket tournaments are some of the few occasions where Indians come together and enjoy themselves with friends and family. The act of being able to enjoy the game and cheer for your favourite team is what makes this sport popular in my country.
