I’ve never regarded myself to be able to offer anyone advice. In reality, it was usually the other way around because I was the one who required counsel from others. As a result, when one of my younger sisters asked me about joining a modelling club approximately 5 years ago, I felt quite silly since I had no idea what to recommend. However, I gathered my thoughts and advised her to join the modelling club. Needless to say, it was the first time I had given someone sound advice.

Yet, after imparting that advice to my cousin, I got concerned and scared since I had no idea how my uncle would respond. In fact, when I previously expressed an interest in modelling, my uncle was adamantly opposed to the concept, claiming that it would harm my studies and education. So, naturally, I assumed that my uncle would be against my suggestion that his daughter joins a modelling club. But I knew that my sister needed my advice as this step would help her build her career. Therefore, I also mentally prepared myself to debate with my uncle if he demanded an explanation or offered to advise. To my astonishment, nothing of the kind really happened.

Anyway, while I was first worried about giving such advice to my cousin, I afterwards felt really good since my uncle had finally realised the importance of pursuing one’s passion and dream. I was also pleased with myself since my cousin believed it worthwhile to seek advice from someone like me, no matter how significant or generic the advice was and now, she is on the way to becoming an aspiring model, just like she had wished.

Not to blow my own horn, I’d like to mention that I’m one such friend who is always ready to lend her shoulder to others so they can vent out. So, this one time, one of my friends was really upset about an interview that he couldn’t crack. So, he thought of giving up. However, I spoke to him for a good one hour.

First, I hadn’t intended to advise him but to listen to him venting so he would feel a bit lighter. However, when he didn’t stop talking about how he was thinking of giving up, I had to step in. I told him that giving up would not help. He will have to dust off and get back to preparing for the next interview as there is no guarantee of time. You never know how your time and life change just within a few minutes. I also gave him some examples to make him understand thoroughly.

I am proud to say that since that time, he understood my words and stood right on them too. After this conversation, he lost two more jobs. But, he didn’t give up. In the third interview, he gave bold answers and got the job. He called me right away and sounded ecstatic. I was equally excited for him too.

Here, I would like to talk about a time when I gave a piece of advice to one of my friends in the neighbourhood, Jack. Although I’m no influencer or adviser, I genuinely want to help others by giving advice that can impact their lives. My friend, Jack, recently completed his graduation in the Engineering field and was working as an intern in a startup company. After a couple of days, he was perplexed about his career prospects and plans. So, he approached me to ask if I could give him any better advice. When I asked him about his dilemma, he explained briefly that he wanted to pursue an MBA, but he couldn’t afford it, and he was dissatisfied working as an Intern Junior Engineer because it paid too little. I respected his perspective and advised him not to quit his paid internship as he would be without a source of income, and every job has its value. So, I suggested starting a side hustle like freelance writing, designing, editing, transcription, etc., as they’re a great way to earn extra bucks. Also, side hustles can be done from home. After a couple of months, Jack and I met again in the society meeting, where he thanked me for my advice. He also added that he improved his designing skills and is now freelancing as a graphic designer for a media company that is paying him well. I felt glad that my counsel had been helpful and advantageous to him.
