Task 1 Sample Question
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You need to take some time off from work to go on holiday.
Write a letter to your direct manager. In your letter:
- Ask for time off and explain why
- Provide the dates and times for which you will be unavailable to work
- Describe what you will do to prepare or make up for your absence
Write at least 150 words.
Sample Answer:
Dear Ms Dutt
I am writing this letter requesting to allow time off so that I can take a holiday trip with my family.
I’m requesting you to grant me this holiday, as this year, my extended family have planned a family reunion in our ancestral home. There will be extended family members who I’ve not seen for more than 3 years, and this is an opportunity that may not come too often.
Since the reunion is planned for July 2nd. I am formally requesting time off from work from Thursday, June 30th, until Friday, July 8th. Thus, I will be available until June 29th and will join work back on July 11th.
To ensure the work continues as it is even during my absence, I’ll be allotting the work to my team in advance so the team’s progress as a whole does not slow down.
I look forward to receiving your reply

Dear Sir / Madam,
I am well versed with the fact that it is the busiest time of the year for our company. However, I am writing to seek your permission to take some time off from work to go on holiday that is due in first week of September.
I have joined your esteemed organization three years back and tried my level best to not take any additional holidays apart from what the company offers. The monthly progress report on various projects is reflection of my dedication and punctuality in completing my tasks successfully. During the pandemic I willingly came to work despite of mandatory work from home routine for the company’s benefit. However, due to a family holiday planned in first week of September by my sister whose wedding is due in 3 months I would like to take a break from 2 – 10 September. I have already instructed my team members regarding the process that the projects needs to avoid any delay in the project delivery. Besides this, I will available on call during working hours.
I hope you understand my reasons for expecting a holiday leave during the mentioned dates. Your early response on this regard will be highly appreciated as it would help me do the bookings smoothly.
Yours truly
XYZ

Band 6.5 Information and ideas are logically organised and there is a clear progression throughout the response. Errors in grammar and punctuation are present, but they are rarely impeding communication.
