The IELTS General Training Writing will give you a problem to write a letter requesting information or explaining a situation. You should write at least 150 words, and it is advisable not to spend more than 20 minutes on Task 1.
Below is a sample of Task 1 (informal) letter
Task 1 Sample Question
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
Last month you had a holiday overseas where you stayed with some friends. They have just sent you some photos of your holiday.
Write a letter to your friends. In your letter:
- thank them for the photos and for the holiday
- explain why you didn’t write earlier
- invite them to come and stay with you
Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write any address.
Sample Answer:
Hi David and Susan,
I hope this letter finds you well. I was overjoyed when I got your letter. Thank you so much for those kind words and the lovely photos of us. Sorry for the delay in replying, we got so caught up in our unpacking, we didn’t get time to check our mail until a week later.
Looking at these photos brings back so many memories, and we cannot thank you enough for your warm hospitality and the way you took out time to show us around to all the best spots. John was also saying that we would have been lost in that country hadn’t it been for you two. Thanks to both of you once again..
In fact, we were thinking, why don’t you and David come here to Dubai on a holiday, it’ll be really fun! We told you about the spare room we have, so you’re always welcome to stay with us when you’re here. You could always think about making the trip during November-February, as the weather is lovely that time around.
Please do consider coming here, and once again thank you so much for the photos!

Hi Danish n Shandi ,
Hope you guys are doing well as it sounds so. I enjoyed a lot and it was so fun last month, and that’s the best holiday i ever had.
Thank you very much guys for the lovely picture sent along with the letter, it means alot to me as those take me back to the sweet memories we had at your place .and Shadi was really nice and helpful through out my stay their n special thanks to her though , more than anything i should thank you again for the lovely arrangements that made my holidays more enjoyable and time preserving.and the Safari was one of the best experience one could get there.
However I should apologise at the same time not wetting to you both as I was so busy submitting my dissertation for the 3 rd year.
Finally , i thought of inviting you guys to my home for the year end vacation where I too would get holidays , I will make all the needed arrangements for that ,but make sure you guys keep that time available during that time .

Overall Band 4
The tone of the letter is inappropriate.Some grammatical structures are produced accurately but errors are frequent and impede meaning. Punctuations are faulty, user needs to be accurate with the grammar to attain good bands.

Hello John,
I hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits. I was so happy to see the holiday pictures that you send me last week. My friend, I thank you and everyone out there very much as it was one of the best holidays I ever had in my life. Again, those lovely photos reminded me of all the good times we’d together.
By the way, I’m so sorry for not writing to you, because, as you know, I was so caught up with my office work here. Unlike Dubai, you know, we Indians have to work day and night to bring food on the table, or else, I would’ve written to you earlier.
But anyway, I just can’t wait for our next get-together and I’m really excited to tell you this. It’s my house warming next week, and I would like to have you all here at my home for the party. I will confirm with dates.

Concentrate on tenses, usage of prepositions.
