The IELTS Reading Yes No Not Given type of question is one of the 14 questions asked in the exam. This question requires candidates to read the passage accurately and determine if the author’s opinion in the provided statement agrees or disagrees with it or if it is not included in the passage.
Sample Reading Passage:
| Seeds are being brought here from all over the world, from seed banks created by governments, universities, and private institutions. Soon, there will be seed varieties from at least 100 crops in the Svalbard vault – extending to examples of all of the 1.5 million known crop seed varieties in the world. If any more are unearthed, either in the wild or found in obscure collections, they can be added, too – the vault has room for at least 4.5 million samples. Inside the entrance area, it is more than 10°C below freezing, but in the chambers where the seeds are kept, refrigerators push down the temperature even further, to -18°C. At this temperature, which will be kept constant to stop the seeds from germinating or rotting, the wheat seeds will remain viable for an estimated 1,700 years. |

I read somewhere that words that quantify should be noted. In the passage it says “the vault has room for *at least* 4.5 million samples” while the question states “There can be a collection of almost 4.5 million known crop seed varieties.”
*At least* means means minimum it can carry, which means it can carry well over 4.5 million crop seeds. While *almost* means it can carry close to 4.5 million but not 4.5 million. I think these mean two different things or am I wrong? Based on this logic, I was really confused but ended up giving my answers as NO.

It is clearly mentioned in the passage that the Svalbard vault will consist of 1.5 million known crop seed varieties and there’s room for 4.5 million samples. So, the answer is Yes. In such questions, apart from the words “at least” and “almost”, “can” is the word to be taken care of in the question.

in the 4th question there is no minus sign so answer will be – No

Statement 4 should be marked as NO. The passage indicates that the temperature should be (-18) and not (18).
