For the first question, the passage clearly states that life itself would be impossible without salt. So we cannot live without consuming salt. Hence the answer is NO.

Did I misunderstand it? Probably the answer is YES.

Surely the answer is NO, as impossible in the paragraph indicates that it is essential; therefore we infer that there is no possibility of living without the salt.
