Do you know that “Family” is an important topic in the IELTS cue card section? You might be asked to describe your family or talk about occasions that you celebrated as a family. In any case, you need to have the vocabulary handy. You’re given just 1 minute to prepare on the topic, so it is good to know various words to describe it.
Some words that you need to know:
Family – vocabulary
Sibling | Shares the same biological parent as you |
Niece | Daughter of your sibling |
Nephew | Son of your sibling |
Spouse | Refers the male or female partner |
Sister-in-law | Sister of your spouse |
Half-brother | Son of one of your biological parent |
Half-sister | Daughter of one of your biological parent |
The above table may help you with important words to describe your relationship with people. Study the family vocabulary and think about people you love the most in the family. Then try to figure out what relationship they fall in. This will help you to be spontaneous and fluent when talking to the examiner.
Try to sound natural when you speak. There is quite a lot of difference between “Dad” and “Father”.
My Dad gave me a gift → may fetch you more marks Than My father gave me a gift …. Here, father just means a biological relationship and Dad means an emotional connection. |
Say | Don’t say |
---|---|
Dad | Father |
Mom, Mum | Mother |
Granny | Grandmother |
Family should be a fairly easy topic, but take care not to become too emotional. Try to be detached from your answers. Concentrate on the vocabulary and pronunciation and don’t get carried away by the feelings and sentiments. They might make you stutter and you may be in search of words to convey a strong affection or hatred.
