Describe an Area of Countryside You Know and Like – IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer 1
- Where it is
In my childhood, I spent time in a village in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India. The village was named after the local species of earleaf acacia trees, which are locally known as Sonajhuri. It was located a short distance away from the famous town of Bolpur, which is a popular tourist spot.
- What its special features are
The area was sparsely populated, with only a few houses dotting the landscape as far as the eye could see. At the time, there was a paved main road running through the village, which connected it to the neighbouring town and other villages. The roads leading into the village, however, were unpaved roads of rich red soil that are so characteristic of the region. There were also some natural canyons and small ravines created by weathering, which are known as khoai and form a distinctive part of the natural heritage of the region.
- What you and other people do in this area
My stay there made me appreciate the carefree way of life that is so unique to rural areas. The stillness in the air and the quiet beauty of nature made the place truly unforgettable in my mind. Usually, people engage in various activities, such as farming, pottery, and weaving, with agriculture being the primary occupation. The region is known for its vibrant cultural events like Poush Mela and Basanta Utsav in Santiniketan, where locals and visitors come together to celebrate with music, dance, and art and it attracts a lot of tourists, even from foreign countries. Visitors often explore Tarapith Temple, Bakreswar Hot Springs, and the rustic beauty of the Khoai region, while locals enjoy community gatherings and traditional Baul music performances.
- And explain why you like it
What I remember most about the region was how refreshing and clean the air was, free of the suffocating pollution of the city. The lush greenery of sonajhuri and mangrove trees was a pleasing sight. But what I liked most about the area was how clear the skies were at night and allowed me to see the stars and point out constellations like Orion. I also liked that we could see fireflies in the evening, flickering against the rich dark tapestry of the evenings, and in the cold winter mornings, the grass and leaves were swathed in dew which looked beautiful. I look forward to being able to visit the place once again and being able to savour life at a slower pace, away from the breakneck momentum of life in the city.

One countryside area I know and like is Coorg, also known as Kodagu, in the state of Karnataka, India. Also known as the ‘Scotland of India’, this hill station is located in the Western Ghats, about 250 km from Bangalore.
- What its special features are
Coorg is famous for its vast coffee estates, mist-covered hills, and dense forests. The region is known as the ‘Coffee Capital of India’ due to its high-quality coffee production. In addition to coffee, the area produces spices like cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon. Some of the most popular natural attractions here include Abbey Falls, where water cascades down from a height amidst a green forest, Raja's Seat, a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of the valley, and the Dubare Elephant Camp, where visitors can interact with elephants.
- What you and other people do in this area
In Coorg, both locals and visitors engage in a variety of activities. Coffee cultivation is a major occupation for the locals, and many families have been involved in it for generations. Tourists often visit the Nisargadhama Forest for nature walks or go river rafting on the Barapole River for an adrenaline rush. Trekking is also popular here, with Tadiandamol Peak, the highest peak in Coorg, being a favorite spot for hikers. Additionally, many people visit Bylekuppe Tibetan Monastery, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India, to experience its peaceful environment and vibrant prayer rituals.

I like Coorg because of its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. The cool climate, fresh aroma of coffee, and breathtaking landscapes make it a perfect escape from the noise of city life. I have visited Coorg several times with my family, and each visit feels refreshing and rejuvenating. The hospitality of the local Kodava community and their rich cultural heritage add to the charm, making this countryside destination truly special to me.
