Band 8.0 Sample Essay
There has been a worrying trend that children watch an excessive amount of television and do not engage much in active or creative activities. This trend can be ascribed to a number of reasons and it must be addressed by definite actions.
Reasons for the trend vary. The primary reason is that children’s television programmes are being broadcast all day with addictive contents, such as vivid and colourful animations. Cartoon Network and Disney Channel with their all-day-long series of animation shows are an evident example of this. Another clear reason is that parents nowadays are busy with their work, so they want children to focus on an activity that does not require much of their attention such as watching television. These two reasons make children spend more time in front of the television screen; this sedentary lifestyle prevents them from participating in active or creative activities.
A number of strong measures must be implemented to tackle the issue. The first solution is limiting the amount of time that a child can watch television. This could be done by activating the parental control mode and setting a fixed operating time limit on their television set. Another feasible solution is that parents must spend more time with their children and together they could engage in outdoor or creative activities. For example, parents could form a family sport team that practices on a regular basis, which may appeal to children more than television.
To conclude, there are obvious reasons why children watch too much television and spend little time on active and creative activities. This negative trend could be tackled by a number of remedies, such as activating the parental control mode on television sets.

We live in an era of technology and children have great curiosity about it. In recent years, the time spent watching television by children has remarkably increased. There are numerous causes to this increasing trend and there are various steps that can be taken to encourage children to involve in other activities such as exercise, playing outside, or reading books.
To begin with, nowadays in many families, both parents are employed and they hardly spend time with their wards. Since children feel bored, they resort to watching television. In addition, television programs are interesting to watch and are very addictive. Some popular channels like Disney, Nickelodeon, etc… telecast cartoons and other programs throughout the day. Moreover, as parents are busy at work, children take advantage of the fact that they are not supervised by elders and spend plenty of time in front of the television. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that kids prefer doing activities that do not involve physical work. In other words, they would rather stay home and watch television than play outdoors or do anything creative.
Parents should take responsibility and regulate the time their children spend watching programs on television. Also, the mothers and fathers should identify the talents their wards possess and motivate them to work towards enhancing their knowledge in different areas. For instance, if a child shows a great deal of interest in music, then the parents can send him/her to music classes. This was the elders can keep them occupied and spend less time on television sets. Most importantly, schools should educate children about the importance of physical activities and the detrimental effects of watching television for a long time. Although some programs that are telecasted on TV can benefit the child, watching an excessive amount of television can affect their brains.
To sum up, it is evident that multiple factors lead to children spending more time on small screens. Hence, motivating children to get rid of the sedentary lifestyle and be actively involved in sports and other activities help the child to stay physically and mentally fit.

Children nowadays spend more time on screens and less time
doing active or creative things.
Why do you think this is the case?
What measures could be taken to encourage children to spend
more time doing active and creative things.
All-around development at a young age is one of the most important things for a promising future but youth these days are investing more and more of their time in front of computers and mobile phones, neglecting other beneficial aspects like active and creative things. This essay will discuss the reason for the same as well as suggest ways to turn this trend around.
I think the major reason why screens are becoming highly addictive nowadays is the amount of content available on the internet. The internet has transformed into this vast and endless sea of media and entertainment. It has several streaming platforms available which are easily accessible for anyone like Netflix and Disney. In addition, having a social presence on social media apps has turned out to be an essential aspect of life for any teenager. With so much variety of activities to do, it is difficult for youngsters to put that screen down.
Another factor could be the lack of involvement from the parent’s side in the child’s daily activities. Due to hectic schedules and busy work life, they don’t really have time to play with their kids or to supervise them. During the pandemic, when adults were working from home and the whole family was confined to a single space, parents usually would make their children engage in activities that will require the least supervision like watching tv so they can work peacefully.
Measures to solve this situation and influence children towards physical activities like sports and creative activities like dance, music or drawing, are involving efforts from parents as well as the school. First and foremost, parents need to set some boundaries over the use of devices, limiting the screen time to a reasonable time while suggesting to play a game or to go for walk along together. In addition to these steps, schools can promote different sports, games, and electives for students to participate in while also setting up seminars to make them realize the career prospect and benefits of possessing different skills. Such efforts could help one to understand and change their habits accordingly.
To conclude, there are obvious reasons as to why children are glued to the screens all day but to ensure all-round development of young people and to bring back the balance, parents, and school would have to join forces and make efforts collectively.
