Sample Essay
The use of animals for the provision of food, medicine and clothing has been extant for several years. However, the cruel treatment of animals and their slaughter for the purpose of human consumption has evoked the sympathy of numerous people, leading them to declare it an unnecessary practice. I agree with this viewpoint and will elaborate on this in the forthcoming paragraphs.
Firstly, it is needlessly cruel and unjust to the helpless animals to butcher them in order to fulfil our needs. Secondly, excessive consumption of meat on a regular basis can pose risks to our health. As a result, medical professionals are calling for a modification in human diets so that people can experience better health conditions. There has been widespread popularity of plant-based foods and meat substitutes are also widely available. Many people are turning to vegetarianism and veganism to help modify their diets and lifestyles, with them obtaining their protein requirements from a plant-based diet.
Furthermore, research has shown that reducing meat consumption is more conducive to the environment. Additionally, there have been reports of those involved in animal husbandry often using noxious chemical agents and medicines such as antibiotics to boost the growth and meat quality of their animals which further endangers the health of those consuming meat. As for clothing and medicine, ersatz options have been developed thanks to scientific advancement, which renders the extermination of animals futile. Lastly, alternative methods have also been developed for drug and cosmetic testing, which also makes the use of animals in such fields unnecessary.
However, arguments can be made for continuing the use of animal products. It provides a livelihood to several people and stopping animal husbandry would leave such people unemployed. Some people also require animal protein in their diet for health reasons and depriving such people would cause problems.
Thus, in conclusion, it can be said that while there may be a few reasons for utilising animal products, for the most part, their use should be discontinued as it is inhumane and the gratification of human needs cannot be sufficient for causing such suffering to animals.
