The 21st century is an era of technological and mechanical innovation. Today, the degree of growth that humanity has achieved in terms of digital technology and machinery is unparalleled. One of the most notable developments of this generation is automation technology, especially in the field of production automation. There is hardly any large-scale organization that does not employ automation in their manufacturing processes in this day and age. However, there are both benefits and drawbacks to this widely used facility. In the following paragraphs, I will explore the advantages and disadvantages of machine automation.
It is an undeniable fact that automatic technology has enabled companies to make better use of the resources available to them. The reduction in production time, manufacturing defects and human error has significantly increased the productivity of daily operations, thanks to the use of automated equipment. The chief benefits of automation are related to economies of scale since the timely production of goods in huge quantities requires considerably less investment of time and labour.
On the other hand, several negative outcomes have surfaced ever since the dependency on automation has become prevalent. First and foremost, the lack in the requirement of manual labour has left countless workers unemployed. This occurrence has affected especially the industrial sector where the employment of unskilled workers was more widespread. Furthermore, as the functioning of automated machines needs a certain level of expertise from the operator, people without the relevant skills and knowledge are either terminated or have to go through rigorous training to keep up with the changing demands of the job.
Finally, machine automation has indeed been a boon to numerous sectors of the global economy. However, as there are two sides to every phenomenon, the advent of this new age development has opportunities and obstacles as well.
