Sample Reading Passage:

Another common myth about sleep is that the body requires less sleep the older we get. Whilst It is true that babies need 16 hours compared to 9 hours and 8 hours respectively for teenagers and adults, this does not mean that older people need less sleep. However, what is true is that for a number of different factors, they often get less sleep or find their sleep less refreshing. This is because as people age, they spend less time in the deep, restful stages of sleep and are more easily awakened. Older people are also more likely to have medical conditions that affect their sleep, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and heart problems. Sleep patterns can be broken down into two separate and distinct stages – REM and NREM sleep.

  2. Less than 12 hours
  3. More than or equal to 16 hours

2. Identify the stages of sleep pattern.

  2. Non-rapid eye movement (NREM sleep)

3. What are the medical conditions that may affect the sleeping pattern of older people?

  4. All of the above

4. From the passage, what is the common myth about sleep?

  1. Your brain does shuts down during sleep
  2. Adults don’t sleep more with age
  3. Adults and older people can manage with minimal hours of sleep.
  4. All of the above

5. How many hours of sleep are required for teenagers and adults?

  1. 9 hours to 12 hours
  2. 7 hours to 9 hours
  3. 9 hours to 8 hours
  4. 5 hours to 7 hours.

Answers:

1.More than or equal to 16 hours

2. Both A & B

3. All of the above

4. None of the above

5. 7 hours to 9 hours.

Explanation of the answers:

For the first question, the answer is stated on the second line, which says that babies need 16 hours of sleep more than the teenagers’ and adults’ sleeping cycle. So, the answer is “C. More than or equal to 16 hours”.

For the second question, the answer is “D. Both A & B. The answer is given on the eighth line which states that the sleeping patterns can be broken down into two distinct stages, i.e., REM, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement and NREM, stands for Non-Rapid Eye Movement.

For the third question, the answer is mentioned on the seventh line that medical conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea, heart problems, and others affect older people’s sleeping cycle. So, the answer is ” D. All of the above.”

For the fourth question, the answer is C. Adults and older people can manage with minimal hours of sleep. The question is the common myth about sleep from the passage and option C is relevant to the question.

. The question has been taken from the first line and the answer has been paraphrased. “The body requires less sleep the older we get.” has been paraphrased as “Adults and older people can manage with minimal hours of sleep.” So the answer is C.

The answer is in the second line for the fifth question, which states that teenagers and adults must have a sound sleep of 9 hours and 8 hours. Thus, the answer is “B. 7 hours to 9 hours as the young adults and teenagers must get enough sleep of 8 hours approximately.
