The main purpose of public libraries is to provide books, and they should not waste their limited resources and space on providing expensive hi-tech media such as computer software, videos and DVDs. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Libraries are the source of immense knowledge and have been an integral part of our lives since time immemorial. As everything transcends into being a different version of itself with a passage of time, so has been the case with libraries, as well. Some people put forth that libraries should be parochial to having books and magazines and shouldn’t transgress into the digital sources of information. I don’t agree with this statement and in the forthcoming paragraphs, I shall be peddling my point of view on the topic.

As intellectuals say, “The ones who don’t keep up with the pace of the world tumble down the race.” The traditional mode is defunct now in most of the cases including the information and education sector; the dynamism is perceptible. Libraries today need to have subsidiary resources including digital contrivances, and paradoxically, the ancillary resources are becoming the preponderant sources of information given to the digital waves that have enveloped the globe. Moreover, the scope of the information and the confounding profoundness of the information found in the leaps of computers and digital spaces are multifold more than the pages of the books. Hence, to argue that the libraries should stay confined to the pages and mound of printed books without annexing the e-resources to its storage, seems baseless.

Also, as far as space is concerned, having a computer in place with a subtle internet connection is typically more sound as compared to having stockpiles of books and documents in the racks of the library. Adding to that, where an ardent book reader takes a few minutes to a few hours to scout and pick the relevant information whilst turning the pages of the books, net surfers just take a few seconds to type and search for the bits and pieces of the content they need. Hence, from the point of view of the fast-paced world that incessantly dashes and waits for none, having just the books in libraries is not beneficial to anyone.

Though, some might argue that having books is fundamental to libraries and having the e-resources could render dilution to the essence of traditional libraries, I don’t consider that it is a pragmatic statement to cripple the dynamic ripple effect of the present day tech-inclination.

Therefore, it can be concluded that libraries should definitely indulge in alternative resources like computers, videos, etc., to uplift the knowledge base of today’s generation.
