The table illustrates the number of tourists visiting the six World Heritage Sites in Australia between 1996 and 2000.

We can observe from the table that the total number of visitors to the Blue Mountains, Tasmania Wilderness, and Shark Bay witnessed an upward trend. However, places like Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve and Macquarie Island lost their popularity. The Great Barrier Reef was the most attractive tourist destination over the period shown.

In 1996, 1,670,000 visitors paid a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, which is double the figures of those who visited Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve. In the next two years, there was a significant increase in the number of visitors to the Great barrier reef, with a total of 3,200,000 tourists in the year 2000.

In contrast, the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve witnessed fewer visitors in the following years and underwent a consistent decline, falling from 810,000 in 1996 to 770,000 in 2000. In terms of the other popular tourist destinations, Blue Mountains observed a surge in the number of visitors, from 526,000 in 1996 to 581,000 in 2000.

Similarly, Tasmania saw a moderate increase in tourists from 450,000 to 483,000 in 2000. There was an upsurge in the total number of tourists in Shark Bay, which rose from 84,000 to 102,000 in 1998, but plummeted to 89,000 at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Macquarie Island remained the least preferred World heritage destination in Australia, with an average of 330 visitors per year.
