Nowadays, there has been a growing concern that young adults decide to have children at an older age than before. This essay aims at shedding light on this shift and explaining why the merits overshadow the drawbacks.

There is a broad array of reasons that engendered this social movement, among which attempts to eradicate child marriage are the most predominant. To be more specific, in the last decades, many countries across the world have launched numerous campaigns and taken drastic measures to not only raise their citizens’ awareness about the adverse impact of child marriage but also to eliminate this deleterious traditional practice. Take Vietnam and China as illustrations, in the past, girls at the age of fifteen would be forced to get married to boys who were in all likelihood just a few years older than her. As a result, a majority of girls had children during their teenage years, which tremendously afflicted the mothers’ physical and mental health as well as the babies’ development, resulting in a strikingly high number of deaths among both sides, not to mention innate deformities found in many children. This directly suggests that once being properly informed about these facts, many youngsters would opt to settle down later in life.

Despite having its downside, the benefits brought about by this social shift to late parenthood are colossal, namely women’s health being improved and education access being ensured In other words, giving birth is safer when the women are physically and mentally mature enough. According to recent research, while biological development enables women to be at fewer risks of contracting harmful illnesses, mental preparation leads to a decline in the cases of depression. Besides, child marriage has deprived these teenagers of the priceless opportunity of receiving proper education. In many areas in Egypt where child marriage is still implemented, girls and boys alike who have been married are not allowed to go to school and study anymore, causing teenagers to give up on their dreams. What can be inferred from this is that getting married and having children later in life facilitate effective learning and a higher level of education, both of which are of the utmost significance.

To sum up, the main cause behind young adults’ desire to have children later in life is the elimination of child marriage, which subsequently leads to many positive effects such as improvement in women’s and babies’ health as well as better acquirement of knowledge by both genders.
