In IELTS Writing Task 1 of the academic section, there will be a visual representation like the combination chart in the topic ‘Information About the Rates of Unemployment’ on which you have to write a report.
Sometimes, you are asked to explain the combination charts in the IELTS examination. This question type in the IELTS Writing Task 1 requires you to explain more than one diagram or graph and also describe how they are similar or different.
Although it might seem tricky, it’s actually the easiest question type. One effective way to tackle this is by dedicating a separate paragraph for each diagram to explain what data you observe in it.

The line graph below gives information about the rates of unemployment between 1991 and 2005 in three different countries in Europe. The table shows the percentage of men and women in the workforce in these three countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 7 Sample Answer For Writing Task 1 Combination Charts – Information About the Rates of Unemployment
The graph shows unemployment levels in three countries from 1991 to 2005 while the table gives the proportion of men and women in these countries who worked in 1991.
Overall, in Germany, the rate of unemployment rose while there was a downward trend in the other two countries.
In 1991, Spain had the highest unemployment rate at 13% increasing markedly to 18%( 1993-1995), then falling steadily to 9% in 2005. In contrast, unemployment was low in Germany, starting at 4% but climbing gradually to 9% in 1997, dipping to 6% in 2001 and increasing to a high of 11% in 2005. Italy’s unemployment rate fluctuated less than the others, starting and finishing at 8% over this period and reaching a maximum of 12% from 1997 to 1999.
In 1991, just over half the female population in Germany (54.4%) was working compared with more than three-quarters of the men. However, in Spain, about a third of the women were working, and a third of the men were not. Italy’s employment rate among men in that year was similar to Germany’s, but not as many female workers were employed (37.8%).

Band 8 Sample Answer For Writing Task 1 Combination Charts – Information About the Rates of Unemployment
The line graph and table illustrate employment and unemployment rates in Germany, Spain, and Italy from 1991 to 2005.
Overall, in the table, it is evident that more men were employed, with Italian men having the highest employment rate. Whereas, in the line graph, Spanish unemployment decreased steadily, while Germany saw an increase, and Italy had some fluctuations.
Regarding the line graph, Germany’s unemployment rate started at 4%, rose to about 10% in 1997, dropped to 7% in 2001, and then peaked at 12% in 2005. With Spain’s unemployment rate, the percentage went up from 14% to 18% between 1991 and 1996, then sharply decreased to below 8% by 2005.
Considering the table, in 1991, Italian men had the highest employment rate at 77.1%, followed by Germany at 76.5%, and Spain at 66.2%. Among women, German females had the highest employment rate at 54.4%, followed by Italian women at 37.8%, and over a third of Spanish women were employed.

Band 9 Sample Answer For Writing Task 1 Combination Charts – Information About the Rates of Unemployment
The line graph highlights the unemployment levels in Italy, Germany, and Spain from 1991 to 2005, while the table presents employment data for men and women in these countries in 1991.
Overall, Spain consistently had the highest unemployment rate among the mentioned countries over the period. Additionally, Spain had the lowest employment level in 1991 among the nations mentioned.
In the line graph, by 1991, Spain had the highest unemployment rate at 13%, which increased to 18% between 1993 and 1995, before dropping to 9% in 2005. Regarding Italy, unemployment remained relatively steady, starting at 8% in 1991, peaking at 12% between 1997 and 1999, and then gradually decreasing back to 8% by 2005. Conversely, Germany started at 4% in 1991, gradually increasing to 9% by 1997, and exceeding 10% after the year 2004.
Considering the table, in 1991, men had higher rates of unemployment than women in all three countries. Moreover, Italy had the highest proportion of employed men at 77.1%, while Germany had the highest proportion of employed women at 54.4%. To mention, Germany had the highest overall employment rate when considering both male and female percentages.

The graph illustrates unemployment rates over a period of 14 years, while the table provides information about the number of men and women in three European countries who had jobs in 1991.
Overall, Germany had the lowest percentage of unemployment rate from 1991 to 2001, and had the highest working population in comparison with the other two countries in 1991.
Spain had the highest unemployment rate at about 13% rising significantly to 18% (between 1993 and 1995) and then starting to decline at almost 9% in 2005. Similarly, Spain had the lowest working rates for men and women, at 66.2% and 32.3% respectively in 1991. The men who had a job in Germany and Italy were almost equal rates in that year.
After 2001, the number of unemployed people began to increase from 6% to nearly 11% in Germany, while the jobless population for both Spain and Italy showed a declining trend (above 10%).

The graph shows the unemployment or jobless people rate or status between 1991 to 2005 in three countries like Spain, Germany and Italy. The following tables give the details about the employment percentage of men and women in the year 1991 for the above said Europe countries.
In Spain, 13% was the unemployment rate in 1991, inclined 18% between 1993 to 1995, gradually falling to 9% by the year 2005, which shows the increased employment rate in the period 1995 to 2005. Italy had the 8% of jobless people in 1991 & 2005 and rose to 12% in 1997. Germany had the lowest level of unemployment, i.e., 4% in 1991, which moderately increased to 9% in 1997 finally it reached 11% in 2005.
Germany and Italy had almost the same percentage of the men employed in 1991, around 77.00%, but the women employed rate was high in Germany (54.4%) compared to Italy (37.8%). Another country, Spain, had 66.2% of the men’s employment. Unfortunately, the women’s employment rate was nearly half of the men’s work.

can we write overall in the last section or the overview part can be skipped, also cant we write numbers or calculations in the overview ?

The overview section must be written right after the introduction and not at the end as a conclusion.
You should present concise, error-free information in the overview section. You may use figures, if needed, to support your point of view.

The line graph provides information about how much unemployment rates had changed between 1991 and 2005 while the table examines percentage of men and women in the labour market in Spain, Germany, and Italy in the year 1991.
To begin, all three European countries had an increase in unemployment rates until the year 1993, despite the different starting points of each country, where Spain had a percentage of unemployment of more than double that of Germany, 4% and 13%, respectively. While Italy faced a steady rise in unemployment rates (8% to 12%) until 1999 where it began to decrease reaching the same starting point (8%).
Percentage of different genders employed in 1991 varied in all three countries, where more than 50% of women where in the labour market in Germany compared to less than 40% in Italy and Spain, 37.8% and 32.3%, respectively. In addition, the employment rates of men in Italy and Germany were the highest, 77.1% and 76.5%, respectively, compared to 66.2% of men employed in Spain.
Overall, Italy and Spain had experienced a decrease in the percentage of people without jobs over the time, whereas, Germany had a rise in unemployment rates in the later years.
