It is considered by some that awarding students who excel in their examinations is a good practice while others put forward the argument that, as a substitute, students showing academic progress should be awarded. In m y opinion, academic toppers as well as those who show progress need to be rewarded.

On the one hand, Proponents of rewarding academic toppers say that when school appreciates their hardwork with prizes, their performance will motivate other students to work harder and improve their grades. If school do not reward them, some of them will lose the motivation and that may reflect in their grades. Take Schools in Nigeria as an example, it has become a regular practice for them to gift students who excel which has kept students focused on retaining their grades. Hence it is a good development

On the other hand, some people say that alternatively students who show a great progress should be rewarded. Rewards motivates students to worker harder to achieve better results. The understanding that the school acknowledges their efforts will be a motivation for them and they will want to improve their overall performance by working harder. To illustrate this, My parents always rewarded me
for every progress I made in high school. This act prompted me to always aspire to do better each term until I started topping my class. Thus, it is suggested that schools take the same action to encourage students to learn.

In my opinion, any form of progress should be recognised regardless. As human beings we all crave appreciation. If schools only reward academic toppers, others may assume that prizes are not meant for them. This will make them give up even without making an effort to get better grades.

In conclusion, reward encourages all students to work harder. Therefore in my opinion, not only the toppers but also the students showing progress should be rewarded.
