In the light of COVID-19 pandemic, most people are undergoing lock-down period. As the travel restriction is rescinded, the ripple effect is enormous as the it brings indelible deteriorating effect on the nation’s economic status. The unemployment rate soars upwards, and the taxpayers cannot afford to contribute tax disbursements to the country. It results in deficit in nation’s budget and surprisingly, some people opine that secondary education should be revoked since the future workforce is unable to fulfil the prospect demand of labour market. I am totally against this statement whereby secondary education should be continued in nurturing talents.

Firstly, as the globalisation trend moves rapidly, the job nature changes constantly even though the economic recession occurs at present. As consequence, there are a plethora of manual or repetitive jobs being displaced by technology-mediated roles such as IT security analyst, data analyst, and data scientists. These state-of-art jobs obviously require people to pursue higher education. On the account of such criteria, imagine a country lacks effort in promoting secondary education and beyond, a nation will face severe talent shortage to drive the nation’s innovative growth and productivity. This is due to requirement of high technical level of labourers is mostly sought-after, and these people need to receive advanced education to succeed at these positions. Otherwise, the country is mudded amid economic downturns as capital-intensive industries are in high demands now and future.

Secondly, a good education will allow people to be well-equipped to face economic adversity. They are well-developed intellectually to circumvent the difficulties by making earnings in an alternative way opportunistically. On the contrary, the primary education just teaches people on rudimentary skills such as writing, reading, and speaking. By integrating secondary education, people are trained to think critically and make decision at an opportune moment. They could be the future leaders in designing an effective welfare system to yield a utopian society. These values can be learnt through history and geographic lessons that only offered by the secondary education. Meanwhile, advanced science classes like biology, chemistry, and physics are taught rigorously during high school education. Therefore, high school education serves as a platform for students to spark their own interests and is vital for the students to select what profession they are likely to be.

All in all, the secondary education is imperative in forming a holistic development among young people to form the stable pillar of a nation. I do believe that country’s economic turmoil can be overturned by fostering a high-caliber education among future young talents.

Overall Band: 5
There is an overuse of cohesive devices with some inaccuracy. Simple vocabulary is used accurately but the range does not permit much variation in expression.
